Exploring Ayder with a licensed guide
What a licensed guide does in Ayder
Ayder is a small town in the Fırtına Valley, known for its traditional wooden houses, lush greenery and access to high-altitude plateaus. A licensed tourist guide helps you navigate the narrow valley roads, explains the history of the local architecture and takes you to viewpoints that are easy to miss if you drive yourself. They can also arrange visits to nearby plateaus like Badara or Huser, which require a longer drive and specific knowledge of the trails.
In Türkiye, professional guiding at museums and archaeological sites is reserved for licensed tourist guides under the Tourist Guiding Profession Law (No. 6326). Every guide we work with holds a licence from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, is registered with a regional guide chamber and wears the official badge. For the Rize region, this is the Trabzon Guides Chamber (TRO), where 143 licensed guides are registered today. The most common guide languages here are English, German, Georgian, Russian, French, Arabic.
Where your guide will take you
Ayder itself is a charming village with traditional wooden houses, some of which have been converted into guesthouses. The Fırtına Valley is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Black Sea region, with steep slopes covered in tea plantations and dense forests. Your guide can take you on walks through the valley, showing you the local way of life and the natural beauty of the area.
For a more adventurous day, your guide can take you to Badara Plateau or Huser Plateau, which are higher up in the mountains and offer stunning views. These plateaus are known for their traditional stone houses and the opportunity to see local livestock. You can also visit the Rize Museum in the provincial capital, which is a historic building known as the Yellow House, showcasing the region's cultural heritage.
When to visit Ayder
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the best times to visit Ayder. The weather is mild, the valley is green, and the crowds are smaller than in the peak summer months. Summer can be warm and rainy, but the high plateaus are cooler and a great escape. Winter is cold and snowy, with fewer visitors, but the landscape is beautiful if you are prepared for the weather. Your guide will suggest the best activities for the season.
Tips for your guided days
Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the paths in the valley and on the plateaus can be uneven and muddy after rain. Bring a light jacket, as the temperature can drop quickly at higher altitudes, even in summer. Your guide can help you plan your day to avoid the busiest times and make the most of the local attractions. Entrance tickets to museums are bought on site, and your guide can advise you on what is worth seeing.
How booking an Ayder guide works
Choose Ayder, your date, the number of days, the guide language and your group size in the search box at the top of this page. You will see how many licensed guides in the region speak that language and the typical daily rate. Send the reservation request and we contact available guides; you receive your guide's contact details within 24 hours.
English-speaking guides in Ayder typically start from about €120 per day; rarer languages can cost more. The daily rate covers one destination and guiding only — entrance tickets, transport and meals are not included. Rates are indicative and confirmed when you book. We do not take any payment online: the guide is paid directly in cash at the start of the tour.
If no local guide speaks your language, a guide can come from another region; their travel and accommodation are then added to the booking. Need transport as well? A private car or van with driver can be arranged together with your guide — see the vehicle options below.
