Exploring Çatalhöyük with a licensed guide
Why visit Çatalhöyük with a guide?
Çatalhöyük is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, representing a pivotal moment in human history when hunter-gatherers transitioned to settled agricultural life. Because the site is an active archaeological excavation, a licensed guide is essential to interpret the complex layers of history, the unique 'honeycomb' house architecture, and the symbolic wall paintings that have survived for millennia.
In Türkiye, professional guiding at archaeological sites is reserved for licensed tourist guides under the Tourist Guiding Profession Law (No. 6326). Every guide we work with holds a license from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and is registered with a regional guide chamber. For this area, guides are registered with the Ankara Tourist Guides Chamber (ANRO), where 714 licensed guides are registered today. The most common guide languages here are English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, Italian.
A private guide provides a personalized experience, allowing you to focus on the specific aspects of Neolithic life that interest you most, whether it is the urban planning, the burial customs, or the artistic achievements of these early inhabitants.
The history of the site
Discovered by James Mellaart in 1958, Çatalhöyük has provided scholars with unprecedented insights into the Neolithic period. Excavations have revealed 13 distinct building floors, with the earliest settlement dating back to 6800 B.C. and the latest to 5500 B.C. The site is famous for its dense, interconnected houses where residents moved across rooftops rather than streets.
The urban planning observed in the 7th and 2nd floors is considered some of the most sophisticated of its time. Your guide will explain how these early people lived, how they managed their resources, and why they buried their dead beneath the floors of their homes, a practice that offers a unique window into their social and spiritual world.
Planning your visit
Çatalhöyük is located near Küçükköy in the Çumra district of Konya, approximately 48 kilometers from the Konya city center. Because it is a significant distance from the city, most visitors combine a trip to the site with other historical landmarks in Konya, such as the Mevlana Museum.
The site is best visited during the spring or autumn months when the weather is mild. As it is an outdoor site with specific excavation areas, comfortable walking shoes and sun protection are highly recommended. Your guide can assist with coordinating transport and ensuring your visit aligns with the site's opening hours.
Tips for your guided day
Since Çatalhöyük is a protected site, visitors should follow all instructions provided by the site management and their guide. Photography is generally permitted, but please check for specific restrictions inside the excavation shelters. Bringing water and a light snack is advisable as facilities at the site are limited compared to major city museums.
If you are interested in the broader history of the region, ask your guide to include a visit to the Konya Archaeological Museum, which houses many of the artifacts found at Çatalhöyük, including the famous Mother Goddess figurines and intricate wall reliefs.
